The wood started its long journey to its final form with strips of soft maple wood. Each strip was cut into segments and glued together to make a rough, 12-sided circle. 14 rows of these circles were sanded flat and glued together to give its general shape, 10” tall and 8” wide at the center.
This rough form was turned smooth on a lathe. Then 51 horizontal beaded rows were cut into the wood with a special tool. Each row was further divided with 144 vertical lines with a wood burning tool, for a total of 7,344 tiny rectangles. The pattern was then hand-painted in with India ink markers, which are odorless, permanent, waterproof, and lightfast.
